Efficiency of different additives in the improvement of the oxidation stability of fatty acid methyl esters with different properties

This study evaluates six formulations in improving the oxidation stability of different fatty acid methyl esters (MEs). Two MEs differed unsaturation levels as they were synthesized from feedstock: a blend soybean and sunflower oils, waste cooking oil; did not fulfill requirements EN 14214 standard concerning their (?0.6 h) some impurities. The third (SoSuME-EN) fully compliant with standard. Five phenolic-based, containing single or mixed antioxidant compounds molecular structures; one was amine-based. Different dosages added to ME samples (corresponding addition range 50?48300 ppm). expressed induction periods, IP, determined by Rancimat method, used for calculation stabilization factors, SF, indicating efficiency applied formulation. formulation 2-(1,1-dimethylethyl)- 1,4-benzenediol most efficient lowest consumption rate highest SF achieved low quality ME. 2,2?-Methylene- -bis-(4-methyl-6-tert-butylphenol) linked higher potency than amine-based phenolic two bulky tert-butyl groups. Among 4 selected additives, butylated hydroxytoluene 2,2?-methylene-bis-(4-methyl-6-tert-butylphenol) had similar SoSuME-EN (at ?500 ppm produced ? 2), while it took twice this amount butylphenols achieve same effect.
